History of Donuts

History of donuts dates back to the 17th century when the Dutch settlers brought sweet potatoes and various nuts from Africa. These were used as their food source as these were easily available and they were also cost effective. They were roasted, but the filling was not until the late part of the 19th century. This was a time when donuts spread all over Europe and America. The European settlers brought their skills with them and when they had new lands they started making donuts. There are many different versions of donuts throughout the world today.


One of the most common versions of donuts is the American donut which is very much like the continental variety but with an American flare. Today the donut comes in several different forms including chocolate, dark chocolate, and maple glazed. The filling of the American donut varies according to the brand, but most have the traditional chocolate and or nuts filling. It is topped off with a cherry or other fruit topping. There are also donuts with cinnamon and raisins on top.


There are other versions of donuts also from the European continent. Many of these contain raisins or nuts and have a very thin consistency. Other doughnuts have a coarser texture and are not as popular as other donuts. In the Middle East, donuts were considered a delicacy. In addition to being a breakfast treat, they also helped the Jews in their daily diet and were an important part of their survival.


Most of the history of donuts involves the rising of the donut dough. The ingredients that go into preparing it can vary greatly. Some recipes needed vegetable oil while others needed only eggs and butter. Most recipes required that the dough be left to rise slowly and were baked in ovens. Donuts were initially made from oil seeds which were roasted and then cracked to produce the desired donut form. The concept of donut cooking spread throughout Europe and then across the world as more settlers moved to southern regions of the Dutch East Indies.


The history of donuts includes many different versions including the very popular krispy kreme donuts, which are extremely popular in New Orleans and similar Cajun regions of Louisiana. These are glazed and then fried to create a golden brown crust. They are often served with maple syrup and marshmallows to add to their salty and spicy flavors. Many people love these donuts and it has become a signature dish in many restaurants.


An interesting version of the rich history of donuts comes from Germany. This popular pastry was called Krumpen or Chimpanzees donut. These delicious round shaped donuts were created by the German chef, Katie Holdefehr. He decided that he would take the basic donut shape, cut and soak long strips of coconut meat in a mix of water and vinegar for about an hour then fry them in a cast iron skillet until they were golden brown.


Katie also included an open-faced, butter flavored, "terracotta" filled donut which was filled with his special sweet caramel sauce. After that he cut off the "nest" so the donut could be enjoyed right out of the pan. The recipe for this donut is included along with all the instructions needed to make it. In addition to that, most European countries used this term for a donut, while in the United States it was more likely to translate into "sundaeh" or breakfast pastry. As time passed, American started calling it crullers.


Today there are many different versions of the history of donuts. A familiar sight is the chocolate-flavored ones you see on theourmet coffee shops across America, and across the world. There are also versions with blueberries, rum or brandy filling, and even fruit fillings. The fillings range from basic sugar, to nuts, raisins, cherries, cinnamon, honey, and even vanilla. The recipes and preparation techniques have changed over the years but the donut has remained as one of America's favorite pastries.
