  1. Preheat oven to 350ë.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar and herbs (if using).

  3. Add the beer and stir until blended.

  4. Put in a lightly greased bread loaf pan (5 X 9 or 4 1/2 by 8 1/2).

  5. Bake for 1 hour.

  6. Combine the butter and garlic (if using).

  7. Remove the bread from the oven.

  8. Pour the butter mixture over the top.

  9. Allow the bread to rest in the pan for 10 to 15 minutes before removing.

  10. The bread is can be eaten immediately, but it's a little easier to slice once it has cooled down.
